SCRAPING OF POST UTME- ASUU PROTESTS
Following the scraping of the Post Unified Tertiary Examination, Post-UTME, by the Federal Government, the Academic Staff of University Union as argued that the scraping of Post-UTME will only lead to "portends serious danger for the quality of Nigeria education."
According to Punch, the National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, tabled the protest at a press briefing on Monday. "The cancellations Post-UTME, to us, portends serious danger for the quality of Nigeria education ", he said.
Ogunyemi made it known that the federal government never consulted the body before taking a decision to cancelled the excercise.
"The argument of the federal government on the policy is unaccepted and potentially harmful to the future of Nigeria education system", he also said. We call on government to rescind its decision and convene a genuine stakeholders ‘ meeting on the issue before making any policy statement.”, he continued
He argued that there have been improvement in the students since the introduction of Post-UTME.
“Consider a candidate who got a JAMB score of 290 out of a maximum of 400, yet had to withdraw from the University at the end of the first year on account of very poor performance. It is important to note that this happened not in isolated cases. Virtually all universities reported such cases.
“The University of Ibadan conducted a study on the correlation between JAMB scores and performance at the University, and reported a negative correlation between the two. The results were published in the Ibadan Journal of the Social Sciences. The introduction of Post -UTME was based on sound empirical evidence.”
Some university have flouted the decision by consulting the Post-UTME, source have confirmed.
