LIFE IN ER: EPISODE 2**Some Years Back**- BY HAMZAT ODUNOLA MARIAM

EPISODE 2**Some Years Back**

Father has been swindled by some Igbo guys. The family is falling apart. Baami (My father) fell into the trap set by some Igbo guys about purchasing a “container” that contained some goods.
My father whom we call Baami is a trader of clothes in the popular Gbagi market of Ibadan. Although we don’t live in luxury, still we don’t go to bed hungry. Just as father used to say, no matter how harsh the economy is, people will still buy clothes because covering our nakedness is as important as Aso-ebi to the Yoruba people.  So through buying and selling of clothes on a large scale, father made ends meet (we were averagely okay).

The family’s misfortune started when father got to know a couple of Igbo guys. The guys managed to convince Baami (My father) that they had a container on the sea from Dubai and they needed a sum of three million naira to ensure its safe delivery. They told him that when the ‘container’ arrives he is going to have a profit share of about ten million naira. Father who had never been gullible got enslaved with their words and decided to get the money.
From friends to family to neighbors and acquaintances, father borrowed as much as he could from everyone he knew. To cut the long story short, father got duped by those guys as they were nowhere to be found after a few weeks of receiving the money.
The family suffered the impact so hard that we found it hard to eat two meals in a day. The people father borrowed from knock on our door every day. My younger ones and I had to stay at home because father could not meet up with school fees payment.
It was at this point that father decided that some of us should go and live with relatives. I was sent to stay with Aunty Titi, father’s younger sister who was a food seller in Enugu. Life with her was okay…………. My beggar didn’t have a choice……………. And at least, the situation with her was better than the situation back at home……..
With her, I was given the opportunity to continue schooling.
I was enrolled in Community Secondary School, Umu during the third term and was placed in SS2B. It was in this class that I met Azuka……to be continued
