WE WANT TRUE FEDERALISM NOT N-DELTA REPUBLIC

The story is not new anymore, that the Niger-Delta Militants, also the called the Ijaw Militants, have said they will declare the Niger-Delta Republic by August 1st, 2016. But this not the intention of the Ijaw Elders and Leaders. Report is out claiming that the so-called Elders and Leaders of Thoughts of Ijaw ethnic nationality in the Niger-Delta region on weekend have warned the Ijaw Militants against their vow to declare a Niger-Delta Republic, saying what they really want is a "true federalism".


According to Vanguard, Ijaw leaders at a consultative meeting in Warri, Delta State, hosted by Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark, said: “The  Elders and Leaders of Thought of the Ijaw nation call for the immediate restructuring of the Nigerian nation along the lines of peaceful federalism, and noticed that this is the panacea for the sustainable development of Nigeria.”
People present at the meeting were, the Bayelsa Governor, Hon Henry Seriake Dickson, former Minister of Culture, Alobo Tonye Graham Douglas, ex-Minister of Police affairs, Alaowei Brodrick, former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir Gabriel Toby, former National Chairman of the Traditional Ruler of Oil Mineral Producing Community of Nigeria, HRM Pere Charles Ayemi-Botu, Mbene III, Ama-Okosu of Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom Alabo-Toby West, and Chief Boma Obuoforibo, INC National Chairman, and    Sir NGO Martins Martyns-Yellowe, Chairman Civil Service Commission.

This is not the first time this kind of crisis is happening in Nigeria. In 2008 and 2009 this kind of situation happened and Gbaramutu was affected but it took the leaders intervention of the Leaders before Amnesty was granted. The Ijaw leaders claimed that the were not aware that the Federal Government is talking and negotiating with the Militants and that nobody has consulted them. 
"This children (Militants) are our children and we cannot fold our hands when they attack them and  pretend not to notice. We must be involved in what the Government wants to do." , said the Elders and Leaders of Thought of Ijaw Communities.

The meeting noted the awareness of the impact of the the Militants group, through their activities, on the Nigeria's Economic and has ordered them to stop. The Meeting as also been used as a medium to call on the Federal Government to release the 10 innocent students of Gbaramutu Kingdom. It was said that the President have been alienating the Ijaw nation.

“I have said there is no need for more wars in the Niger Delta, certainly not in Ijaw land as the matter is not for war-war but  jaw-jaw. I am delighted that our leaders are thinking in that same direction.  This meeting is like a prelude to a larger, more comprehensive Ijaw meeting of all our leaders that the government of Bayelsa state would host in no distant time.", said Governor Dick,
